The EMC contest mentioned by Andrea had real rewards attached: 30 inventors flown from locations world-wide to the US to pitch their ideas, cash prizes for the top 3 ideas, and incubation of many of the ideas via targeted research teams.
These types of rewards spurred over 400 ideas in 2007, and over 900 ideas last year. I agree with you that the company has to make participation attractive!
